Residence Hall Basics
There are three residence halls and four apartments. The residence halls are module-suite style. Each first-year-student suite contains four double rooms and a bathroom for up to eight students.

Most first-year-students reside in Poellath Hall or O’Connell Halls.

The dimensions for Poellath Hall rooms are:

Room – 13’-9” x 15’
Closet – 3’-7” x 2’
Window – 72” x 60” (Mini-Blinds Provided)

The dimensions for O’Connell hall rooms are:

Room – 13’-6” x 14’6”
Closet – 4’10” x 2’5”
Window – 72” x 60” (Mini-Blinds Provided)
Each double room contains:

2 – Standard Twin Beds
2 – Desks
2 – Book Shelves
2 – Chairs
2 – 3-Drawer Dressers
1 – Telephone Outlet Per Room
1 – Cable TV Outlet Per Room
2 – High speed internet outlets (Internet service provided by the college)
Please note: single rooms are generally not available for first-year students.

HOW ARE ROOM ASSIGNMENTS MADE? All rooms are assigned without regard to race, creed, national origin or sexual orientation. Priority for preferences is determined by the date we receive your Lifestyle Preference form. Room assignments and roommate pairings will begin to be made in December (for January) and in May and early June (for August) and will be mailed to you soon after.

HOW ARE ROOMMATES ASSIGNED? Roommates are assigned by the Residence Life Office. Assignments are made using the information supplied on Lifestyle Preference Forms. If you have not yet received your Lifestyle Preference Form, please let us know ASAP. Whenever possible, individuals are matched according to that information. Likewise, mutual requests for roommates and other specific requests are considered on a case by case basis.

WHAT KIND OF TELEPHONE SERVICE IS AVAILABLE? The college provides a telephone line and voicemail in each student room. While many students opt to use their cell phones, we require you to bring an inexpensive phone in order to be able to receive calls and check the voicemails in your room from faculty and staff members as well as other students. If you choose to use this line for long distance calls, you’ll need to use a calling card.

WHAT ARE BATHROOM FACILITIES LIKE? Each suite has a bathroom with one toilet, one shower and two sinks. Students are required to store their personal toiletries in their rooms to make Housekeepings job easier. The Housekeeping staff cleans each suite bathroom daily.

CAN I BRING A CARPET FOR MY ROOM? You are welcome to bring a rug or carpet. Many students do since the student rooms in the residence halls are not carpeted. There are many stores in the area that carry carpets and other furnishings, so you may want to consider waiting until you arrive, have a chance to see your room, and talk with your roommate before you purchase items like this.

CAN I HOOK UP MY COMPUTER IN MY ROOM? Yes! You’ll need an Ethernet card to connect to the internet. Internet service is provided by the college through Road Runner. Please visit their website for more information about how to connect and troubleshoot: http://www.carolina.rr.com/belmontabbey/

IS CABLE TV AVAILABLE? Yes, each residence hall room is wired for cable. A wide variety of channels are provided including a Belmont Abbey College channel.

MAY I BRING MY OWN FURNITURE? Yes, but please note that all of the college-provided furniture must remain in your room. The college provides each student with a bed, mattress, desk, desk chair and a dresser to share. Furniture cannot be disassembled or stored during the year.

WHAT SIZE SHEETS DO I NEED FOR MY BED? All mattresses are standard twin size – but extra long sheets do come in handy. We also encourage you to bring a mattress pad for extra comfort.

WHAT ABOUT WINDOW COVERINGS? Each residence hall room is equipped with mini-blinds. In most cases you will need to bring a curtain rod with you if you wish to hang curtains in addition to the blinds. Because the walls in the residence halls are cinder block, we recommend purchasing the appropriate size tension rods instead of rods which require screws to be hung.

CAN I SMOKE IN MY ROOM? Students are not permitted to smoke in their rooms, in fact, you must smoke 20 feet from a Residence Hall.
