The Office of Academic Assistance and the Academic Resource Center (ARC)

located in the lower-level of the Abbot Vincent Taylor Library, provide a range of services to facilitate students’ academic success and pursuit of excellence at Belmont Abbey College. The Academic Resource Center offers space for tutoring, as well as spaces for individual and informal group studying, and a computer work station.

Mission Statement of the Office of Academic Assistance
The mission of the Office of Academic Assistance (OAA) is to provide academic resources and opportunities for the development of skills necessary for academic success.   In accordance with its mission, the OAA offers individualized academic coaching for skill development, tutoring services, services for students with disabilities, and workshops. 
In keeping with Catholic and Benedictine values, the OAA contributes to Belmont Abbey ’s larger mission of developing balanced persons who strive to realize the full potential of their unique gifts.

The OAA staff invites all members of the BAC community to take advantage of its resources.

Thomas Turner is originally from Minnesota but has lived all around the world. Thomas comes to us from Kingsport, Tennessee. He holds an A.S. from Northeast State (TN) in Business, a B.S. from Northern Michigan University in Social Science Education and Sociology, and a M.S. from Minnesota State University in Higher Education Administration and Geography. His extensive background includes being a Squadron Trainer in the US Air Force; combat communication; teaching History, Geography, and History of the Catholic Church at Our Lady of Lourdes; teaching Economics, Psychology and Government at Florida Air Academy; and teaching Cultural and Human Geography at Minnesota State University. Most recently, Thomas taught Learning Strategies, Reading and Geography at Northeast State. Thomas brings a wealth of experience to our office. As a Nationally Certified Master Tutor through CRLA (College Reading and Learning Association) he will be working to expand academic assistance services offered at BAC. Honors have included being a member of Phi Beta Kappa, designation as a Truman Scholar, and involvement with Student Ambassador Programs. He has also coached swimming, wrestling, and baseball. Please stop by Thomas’ office in the Academic Resource Center, downstairs in the library, and say “Hi!”

Matt comes to Belmont Abbey College with a broad range of educational experiences.  He has teaching experience in Mathematics, Social Sciences, Special needs, and Physical Education.  He attended UNCP and UNCG to earn a BA degree in Social Sciences and Exercise and Sports Science.  In addition to his duties with the Academic Assistance office, he is also the head assistant wrestling coach at Belmont Abbey College.  Honors included being a Magna Cum Laude graduate and a two-time NCAA Academic All American Wrestler.  He is married and has two little boys named Cael and Louden.

Denise holds a B.S. degree in Business Administration and a B.S. degree in Management Information Systems; both were earned at Pfeiffer University in Charlotte.  Before coming to Belmont Abbey College, she worked in the health insurance industry at Cigna Healthcare. She is a member of St. Paul Baptist Church in Charlotte, NC, and serves as the Treasurer with the “Investment Club.”  She is originally from Charlotte; has one daughter and enjoys reading, music, and volunteering in her community.

Sharon comes to Belmont Abbey with extensive coaching experience, with stops at The George Washington University, Kansas State University, St. Louis University, Mississippi State University, and most recently, the University of Tulsa.  She has served as an Academic Liaison, recruiter, Community Service Coordinator, and Guest Lecturer.  Sharon has been awarded her B.S. in Physical Education, and has earned graduate credits toward her M.A. in Higher Education Supervision and Administration at East Tennessee State University.  She processes the character and leadership to guide young adults to be the very best they can be; in mind, body, and spirit.

Kim comes to the Academic Resource Center from the Business Office where she has worked with Accounts Payable and Student Accounts since 2007.  Before coming to Belmont Abbey College, she worked in Customer Service at Duke Energy for many years.  Kim has an Associates Degree in Business Management from Gaston College.  She is a long time resident of Mt. Holly and is married with two teenage children.
