Belmont Abbey College Professor Offers Advice For Making International Trade Safer Giermanski Scheduled to Present at UALR’s International Conference on Transportation

BELMONT, NC --- Belmont Abbey College’s Dr. Jim Giermanski, a leading expert on security and international trade issues, will be one of the featured speakers at an international conference in Little Rock, Arkansas this month.

Giermanski, a frequent consultant to the White House and U.S. Senate on border logistics and international transportation concerns, will present,Jim Giermanski “Smart-box Solutions for the Seven Black Holes on the Southern Border,” on March 30, 2006 at 3:30 PM during the 2006 International Conference on Transportation and Economic Development at the Peabody Hotel in Little Rock, Arkansas.

The three-day colloquium (March 29-31, 2006) will be hosted by the University of Arkansas-Little Rock’s Institute for Economic Advancement along with the Transportation Research Board of the National Academies and the Federal Research Bank of St. Louis. Giermanski will join other speakers, including Rodney Slater, former secretary of the U.S. Department of Transportation; Harvey Rosenblum, executive vice president and director of research for the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas; Patrick Quinn, chairman of the American Trucking Associations; Eric C. Peterson, deputy administrator for Research and Innovative Technology Administration at the U.S. Department of Transportation; Matt Chase, executive director of the National Association of Development Organizations; and executives of Wal-Mart, J.B. Hunt and Maverick Transportation.

The conference will also have special sessions to discuss the perspectives and analyses of transportation issues in the Southwest and Southeast regions, such as light rail systems, finance and regional transportation improvements, NAFTA, border crossing and international trade. They are important to economic development and logistics communities in the region, where corporate giants like Wal-Mart and FedEx are based.

Secretary of Transportation Norman Mineta and Governor Mike Huckabee are also expected to attend.

Giermanski, a professor and director of the Centre for Global Commerce at Belmont Abbey College, received national attention after unveiling a revolutionary high-tech device called, the Sea-Cure Satellite System (SCSS), during a live demonstration last year at Belmont Abbey College. The patented, cutting-edge smart box, developed by Powers International, Inc. (of which Giermanski is chairman of the Board), ensures the tracking and security of a container through combined use of active RFID (radio frequency identification) and satellite technology.

One of the main advantages to the Sea-Cure device is the capability of high speed, secure data transmission that ensures the as easy as checking voicemail or an email account.

“Everyone is aware that security and control in the logistics supply chain are paramount to the efficiency of operations in international commerce and to the security of this country,” says Giermanski, a former FBI and OSI special agent. “Tools like the Sea-Cure Smart Box are becoming essential for our nation’s security, as they provide automatic information on the movement of cargo from origin to destination as well as to detect, record, and transmit breaches into containers or trailers with or without cargo coming into U.S. ports.”

Giermanski is a professor and director of the Centre for Global Commerce at Belmont Abbey College. A current reviewer for the Transportation Research Board, U.S. National Research Council, and past director of Transportation and Logistics Studies, Center for the Study of Western Hemispheric Trade at Texas A&M International University, Giermanski has frequently been invited to testify on NAFTA, transportation, and other International business issues before the U.S. Senate and House, the Texas Senate and House, EPA, and the U.S. International Trade Commission. A member of the Texas Office of the Attorney General’s Trans-border Trucking International Working Group for five years, Giermanski also served for three years as a member of the Research Advisory Committee on Management and Policy for the Technical Advisory Panel at the Texas Department of Transportation.  

An author of over 100 articles, books, and monographs, Giermanski has given over 100 presentations on the subject of security and international trade. He has been published extensively on transportation and trade issues and for five years wrote the International Insight column in Logistics Management

Giermanski’s background as a former FBI special agent, colonel and special agent in the Air Force Office of Special Investigations, where he handled counterintelligence matters, has enhanced his career as the chairman of Powers International, Inc., which provides international supply-chain security solutions. He is also a frequent lecturer on  transportation security issues regarding C-TPAT and other Customs and Border Protection (CBP) programs.
