Exploring The Science of Education Belmont Abbey College Hosts Hundreds of Educators, Students at Annual Physics Conference
BELMONT, NC --- Nearly 200 participants – professors, teachers and students from all over North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia who have a passion for the study of physics – are expected to attend a joint conference at Belmont Abbey College this week.
The 11 th annual meeting of the North Carolina and Southern Atlantic Coast Chapters of the American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT) and the Society of Physics Students will be held at Belmont Abbey College on Friday and Saturday, March 24-25, 2006 (Registration begins at 4:00 PM).

“The purpose of this conference is to share new ideas with educators who specialize in the field of physics,” says Dr. Rajive Tiwari, coordinator of the conference and a professor of physics at Belmont Abbey College. “We want to meet the needs of physics educators in our region and further an interest in education in this field, its research, the applications of technology, and assist in overall teaching effectiveness.”
Speakers at this year’s conference will include, Paul Hewitt, author of Conceptual Physics (on Friday, 8:00 PM in the Haid Ballroom), and Dewey Dykstra, professor of physics at Boise State University and research and teaching column editor for the Journal of College Science Teaching (on Saturday, 8:00 AM in William Gaston Science Auditorium)
Among the various student projects, special sessions, and workshops at this year’s event, there will also be some unique hands-on workshops, such as techniques in photographing the night sky (with Mary Creason at 10:00 PM on Friday) and using satellite imagery and software for environmental physics (with J. The AAPT will present special recognition awards for students and teachers to highlight excellence in the field of physics.
