SHAUN WILLIAMSON NAMED NATIONAL COACH OF THE YEAR BY WOMEN'SLACROSSE.COM; NOLAN EARNS SECOND TEAM HONORS
Belmont Abbey women's lacrosse coach Shaun Williamson was named the 2008 National Coach of the Year, and junior defender Theresa Nolan earned a spot on the second team according to WomensLacrosse.com, which was announced today.
Williamson, who started the program in 2006, led the Abbey to a 12-7 record overall and a 7-3 mark in Conference Carolinas, finishing second in the league standings after they were picked to finish fourth. The 12 wins are a school record, besting the previous mark by four which was set after the 2006 and 2007 seasons. The Abbey finished the season winning five of its last six games as it earned a spot in the Conference Carolinas Tournament final for the first time in the program's three-year history. In his three years, he has produced five all-conference selections, one Freshman of the Year and one All-America selection.
Nolan, a two-time first-team all-conference selection, and a first-team all-region pick by the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association, led the conference in caused turnovers per game with a 1.56 average. A second-team All-America selection last year and a preseason first-team All-American this season, Nolan led the team with 48 ground balls (fifth in the league) and 28 caused turnovers, while scoring four goals and assisting on three others and winning 24 draw controls, which is third in the conference rankings.
